Links from the week:
- Why routine armed police patrols are a bad idea
- Defining Disability, from amandaw at FWD
- Gender in the playground, an F-Word article by Kate Townshend about gender (in)equality in schools
- Meloukhia considers some of the issues around reclaiming words.
- A question, that because of the way society works, can be very ableist to ask.
- Umbrella terms from Anna at FWD. People who aren't the default are far more diverse than the default, but often get thought of as all the same.
- An off-duty police officer is the latest reported victim of homophobic attacks [trigger warning], which left him in a critical condition in hospital.
- A horrific example of the consequences of rape culture - strong trigger warning for these reports and comments: Shakesville, Abyss2Hope, Flip Flopping Joy.
- An essay by Penny Red on Painful Privilege.
- Age discrimination in mental health treatment (BBC)
- The BNP on question time, by Ayaan Hassan
- The BBC puts out an article essentially asking whether fat people deserve abuse. Sadly, it's one of their better articles on the subject, despite its numerous obvious flaws. It starts with a "headless fatty" photo, and doesn't get much better. I don't have time right now for a proper dissection, though.
- An article at Liberal Conspiracy about what works and what doesn't to get people back to work. Unsurprisingly, studies have found that treating people badly doesn't help, but that's what the government policy is.
